Project of Distinction Award
Kirkland Junior High Kirkland Junior High in Kirkland, Washington houses 750 students in grades 7 through 9. This facility replaces an older building that was built on the site in the 1950's and grew to be a valuable landmark of the surrounding community. A Modernization Advisory Team, called the Mod Squad, made up of parents, teachers, administrators and design professionals, led the planning effort to determine how a new facility should be planned and implemented on the existing campus. The solution called for a phased approach in replacing the older buildings. A 1970's era gymnasium addition was kept and was enveloped by the new construction to give the total project a single unifying design. The plan is organized along a north-south circulation axis while an east-west axis serves as a view corridor to the surrounding community. Sustainable design features of daylighting and enhanced ventilation are integral aspects of the project. Classroom spaces are developed along a team teaching approach. Flexible open spaces that can accommodate a variety of learning styles are provided. The project is significant because of its importance in the community and the care that the planners took to make sure that the new building honors that importance as well as it serves the needs of middle school education.
