Welcome Back To The Future: Back to designing the future of education through innovative and exemplary facilities designs. On behalf of the CEFPI North Carolina Chapter, I would like to invite you to attend our Annual Conference, March 10-12, 2013 at the Holiday Inn Resort, oceanfront in Wrightsville Beach, NC. Once a year in North Carolina we get together to learn about what's new in our industry, network with colleagues from around the state, and share our professional experiences and best practices. Well, this year is not different with one small exception. That exception is having the beautiful Atlantic Ocean as a backdrop
A lot of you who know me, know that I am a bit of a techie and selecting "Back To The Future" as the theme for this conference was a no-brainer. I remember in the last scene of the movie when Marty comes back from the past, the professor comes back to the present and warns Marty about events in the future. Marty asked the professor if he and his soon to be wife are OK, and the professor says "you're fine, it's your kids that you need to worry about". That movie is engrained in pop culture and had a profound impact on me as a young adult fresh out of college
I also recall watching a Disney movie with my kids called, "Meet the Robinsons". The movie is about an orphaned little boy who wants to be an inventor but just can't get his inventions to work. During the movie he gets a visitor from the future that takes him to the future where the little boy meets the Robinsons. The boy finds out that he is the Father of all the innovations in the future and his entire life's work is built around a motto that he first quoted, "Keep Moving Forward". Despite all of the obstacles and failures he kept moving forward. We are all keenly aware that times are challenging in our business and we don't have time to look back very long because the educational environment is moving forward and rapidly changing. The futures of the children that we ultimately work for beckon us to move forward and constantly improve our designs. So please be assured that we have packed this conference with a fantastic mix of diverse and informative sessions. I am sure that we will all be both enlightened and inspired! There is truly something for everyone.
Lastly, the horrific event in Newtown affected us all. As a father of three small children, I can't imagine having to go through what the parents in that small community in Connecticut had to endure. We need to do all we can to provide a safe and secure environment for our children that is still conducive to 21st century learning. For this reason, we have selected Mr. Michael Dorn. He is an international authority on designing safe yet effective schools.
I look forward to seeing all of you while we take advantage of this very appealing venue at the beach. I know we will have an unforgettable conference and I leave you with the following quote by Walt Disney,
"Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious... and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths."
