SWBR Architects announced that Rohit Agrawal was recently awarded his U.S. architectural license from the State of New York. A native of India, he received his initial architectural licensing from the Council of Architecture (India) after graduating from the School of Planning and Architecture in New Delhi, India, in 1999. Agrawal specializes in the education market and has worked on projects for Cornell University, University of Rochester, Monroe Community College, St. John Fisher College, Rochester Institute of Technology and the Aquinas Institute.

DSA Architects, a member of SHW Group, has expanded its firm with two new hires. Terrence J. O'Connor joins the firm as a senior project manager. Currently, O'Connor is working on projects for Grand Blanc, Mich., Community Schools and Jackson, Mich., Public Schools. Jeff Sharpe joins DSA as a senior designer. He is currently designing projects for Oakland University and Oakland Community College, both in Michigan. Previously, he was the head of Sharpe Architecture.

Jonathan Schwartz, PE, has been elected associate principal at Carter & Burgess. Currently, Schwartz serves as program manager with the energy and power solutions group and was recently elected as the Energy Engineer of the Year by the North Texas Association of Energy Engineers. Schwartz is a certified energy manager and is LEED accredited.

The Thomas Group, a Tetra Tech Company, announced that Claude Adair has been promoted to associate principal. In addition, Brian C. Domke, Michael H. Hunt, Karen C. Muckstadt and Christian Nielsen-Palacios have all been promoted to associate principals with the firm. Finally, Wendy Robbins has been promoted to principal with the firm.

Sidney P. Ward, AIA, has been named principal of The S/L/A/M Collaborative's Atlanta office. He currently serves as project manger for the renovation and new construction of the anatomy and physiology building at the Emory School of Medicine, a $35 million project slated for completion in 2007.

Maury Parker has joined JAED as an assistant project manager and architectural designer. Previously, Parker worked for the BECO Group in Illinois.

Peter Basso Associates has announced that Sarah Cho has passed the lighting consultant exam administered by the National Council on qualifications for the lighting professions and is a certified lighting consultant. Cho is an electrical engineer who is involved in the technical production of electrical systems and lighting design mainly for K-12 Schools. The company also announced that Eric C. Deska has been promoted to senior associate. His experience in Michigan includes new construction and renovation of a variety of buildings, including the Lake Superior State University performing arts theater, Ferris State University student recreation complex and Allegan High School performing arts and aquatic center additions.

John Major, AIA, has joined Cannon Design as associate vice president. Throughout his career, Major has served as a project manager and designer focused mainly on assignments for the K-12 and higher education markets. Currently, he is the project manager on New York City's conversion of the Bronx Borough Courthouse into a high school. Martha Ball, AIA, LEED, has also joined Cannon design as associate vice president. Prior to joining the firm, Ball was a senior associate at Anshen+Allen in Los Angeles, where she worked on projects including a $102 million bioengineering and genomics research facility for the University of Washington and a $26 million expansion and modernization project for the University of Iowa. She is currently working as project manager on a new student union for California State University, Los Angeles and on a new field house and athletic fields for Los Angeles Valley College. She is also working on a housing project for the University of Southern California.

Beth Yorke, AIA, project director in the education group of Barton Malow's public education department, has been inducted as the president of the Detroit chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). Yorke served as board secretary for two years, then as vice president/president-elect. In 2006, she will continue on the board as immediate past president. Her goals for the upcoming year include improving member services, reaching out to the design community to expand membership and increasing public awareness of the organization and the role of the design professional.

Congratulations to Kingscott Associates who will receive the 2005 Shirley Cooper Award for their outstanding school design in the American Association of School Administrator's (AASA) conference in San Antonio, February 17, 2005. The jury included AASA, AIA and CEFPI members who recently bestowed this award to Knapp Forest Elementary, Forest Hills Public Schools, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Patrick L. Beyer, PE, President and CEO of TBE Group, has been named Florida West Coast Engineer of the Year. The award was announced at the annual National Engineers Week dinner and awards ceremony on February 27, 2004, sponsored by eight Tampa Bay area chapters of participating engineering organizations.

BLRB Architects recently promoted four staff members to associates of the firm. The new associates are Jim Elder; Ron Harpel, AIA; Bob Lindstrom, AIA; and Mike Reynolds, AIA.

Fanning/Howey Associates, Inc. announced the appointment of new principals and senior associates in the firm. Principals include Allen J. Cradler, AIA; Sharon A. Poor; James B. Riggs, AIA; Edward J. Sawa; Michael K. Schipp, AIA; and Paul Shay, PE. Senior associates include Todd C. Arend, AIA; Lexie D. Barker; James E. Doby, PE; Diane A. Fultz; Terry J. Hamrick, CET; Timothy E. Hill, PE; Roger D. Hulsey, AIA; Tim Placie; Marcia Thomas; James F. Tolan; Roy Wagner; and Dean Yuricich, AIA.

The Facility Group recently received two awards from the Southeast Chapter of the Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA). The company took first place for 2004 Design-Build Project in the Public Sector and was also awarded the 2004 Design-Build Project of the Year.

URS recently announced that Scot A. Bini, has been awarded the 40 Under 40 award by NJBIZ, which recognized forty of the most successful executives under the age of forty in New Jersey.

W.S. "Peter" Winebrenner, AIA recently joined BSA+A's Baltimore office and will serve as the regional director of architecture. Peter has over 14 years of experience in architectural design with a focus in K-12 education facilities in the Baltimore region and surrounding areas. His experience with Maryland public and independent schools will complement BSA+A's design expertise in the education industry.

Architecture and design firm WWCOT was recognized by the San Fernando Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA/SFC) with three Design Awards for its work on the East Valley High School Number 3, the North Valley Police Station and Soka Gakkai International's World Culture Center.

Congratulations to James S.H. Johnston, MBE, Scotstoun Glasgow, Scotland, who was recently nominated and recognized by the Prime Minister and Her Majesty the Queen, as a Member of the Order of the British Empire Award - MBE; Johnston received this award for outstanding service to education, engineering and young people over the past 27 years.

Dale Scheidman, AIA, CEFPI international board member and chair, the CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust, was recently awarded the AIA Silver Medal in recognition of his distinguished service to the profession of architecture. The Silver Medal is the highest honor AIA Nevada can bestow upon an individual.

The Facility Group is pleased to announce that Julie Barrett has joined the staff as vice president of business development for the Education Group. Previously serving as business development director for PinnacleOne, Ms Barrett's strengths include preliminary educational facilities planning, pre-construction coordination and constructability plan review, curriculum development, curriculum integration with facilities planning and design processes, and client relations.

Peter Basso Associates Promotes Five to Project Leader

    Peter Basso Associates has promoted Rocsana Nae, Jessica Spak, PE, RCDD, and Bryan Laginess, to Project Leader from Project Engineer and Steven Bryk and Michael Maes to Project Leader from Project Designer.

    Nae and Maes are members of Peter Basso Associates K-12 Schools Group. Nae holds bachelor and master degrees in mechanical engineering from University of Bucharest. Maes possesses more than 25 years' experience in electrical design.

    Spak is a member of Peter Basso Associates' Corporate/Commercial Group and received her bachelor of science in electrical engineering from the University of Detroit Mercy. She's a member of Building industry Consulting Services International (BICSI) and has developed particular proficiency in the field of communication technologies.

    Laginess and Bryk are both members of Peter Basso Associates' Healthcare/Laboratory Group. Laginess has a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan Dearborn and is a member- of the American Society for Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers. Bryk is pursuing studies toward a bachelor of science in electrical engineering.

Fred Skretta has taken the position of Principal at Spirit Lake High School in Spirit Lake, Iowa, effective July 1st. Spirit Lake High School is a 3A school with an enrollment of 420 in grades 9-12. It's a great career move that also brings him closer to family in S. Dakota and Nebraska. In the next several years, Fred will have several exciting school construction related opportunities, including the construction of a new 1000-seat auditorium and gymnasiums.

Douglas D. Westmoreland, AIA, REFP has joined Moseley Architects in Richmond, Virginia as a Vice-President and one of the Managing Principals of K-12 projects. Doug was a founding partner in BCWH and brings 23 years of educational design experience with 24 Virginia school divisions. His projects have been recognized by CEFPI with state, regional and international awards. An active participant in CEFPI programs, he recently led the "Evolving Curriculums" pre-conference workshop at the Southeast Region conference in Savannah.

Stafford King Weise won the SW Regional Design Awards' "HONOR AWARD" for their renovation project 'Lincoln School Restoration' in Lodi, CA.

Dale Scheideman, Clark County School District, NV and Gary Payne, Davis School District, UT received 2004 Bob Vesper Awards from the Southwest Region for their dedication to CEFPI and educational facility planning. Each will be nominated to International Planner of the Year competition, Mr. Scheideman in 2004 and Mr. Payne in 2005. Congratulations for this highest regional honor.
